Fall cleanup: two visits so the last leaves are gone before the snow.

What a fall cleanup includes

Two visits, about three weeks apart: the first in late October when most of the leaves are down, the second in November for the stragglers.
Leaves removed from the lawn, beds, walkway and driveway, and taken away. Not piled at the curb, not blown into the neighbour's yard.
The final cut on the second visit, a notch shorter than summer, so the grass goes into winter at about 2.5 inches and does not mat under snow.
Beds cut back: spent annuals pulled, perennials trimmed to a few inches unless you want the seed heads left for the birds.
Edges and hard surfaces done the same as every mowing visit, so the yard looks finished, not just leafless.

Why leaves off the lawn matter here

A Halifax winter puts snow on the lawn for weeks at a time, and a layer of wet leaves under that snow is how you get snow mould: grey, matted circles in April that take half the spring to recover. Leaves also smother the grass, keep the soil wet and give the voles cover. The lawn that comes out of winter green is the one that went into it clean and cut.

Fall aeration: the best time for it

If you only aerate once a year, do it now. The soil is warm, the air is cool, and the rain is reliable, so grass seed sown after aeration germinates and roots before winter instead of fighting a dry July. We pull plugs across the whole lawn on the first visit and overseed straight after.

Timing in Halifax

Maples and birches drop first, usually in the last two weeks of October. Oaks and beeches hang on into November, and the big spruce never stop dropping needles. That is why one visit does not work. First visits are booked for the last week of October and the first week of November; second visits run through to the end of November, or until the snow stays. A dusting is not a problem; a storm that stays moves the second visit to the first thaw.

After the last leaf

For customers on the Everything plan the next thing that happens is the first snowfall over 5 cm, when the same crew comes back with a shovel and a blower. For everyone else, winter snow clearing is a separate season contract from $649, December 1 to March 31.

Questions about fall cleanup

Why two visits?

Because the maples drop in late October and the oaks and beeches hold on into November. One visit either comes too early and misses half the leaves, or too late and the first ones have matted into the lawn. Two visits, three weeks apart, get all of them and the lawn goes into winter clean.

What if it snows before the second visit?

A dusting melts and we carry on. If real snow comes early and stays, we do the second visit on the first thaw, or in spring as part of the spring cleanup at no extra charge for plan customers.

Do you take the leaves away?

Yes, every time. Leaves piled at the curb blow back onto the lawn and HRM pickup is only on certain weeks. If you prefer paper bags for the green cart, we can do that instead at the same price.

Can you clean the gutters?

Not yet. We stay on the ground. We can tell you if they are overflowing when we are there.
